Risk Detector is a microsite by Allstate, an American insurance company. It analyzes and predicts potential danger in advance by accessing users’ Instagram API.

I participated as a strategist by initiating the concept and building a structure as well as UX writing throughout the entire project.

Overview

Problem

Due to the COVID-19, Russian invasion, and many more crisis in recent years, people are living in a world of uncertainty and insecurity.

As representing this circumstance, half of Millennials and Gen Z are not only unaware of what insurance plan to purchase but also don’t have suitable insurance for themselves.

Outcome

A microsite to connect with potential customers and boost awareness on the importance of insurance plan by warning users of risks they might face by accessing their social media posting.

Main features include:
  • Analysis of potential danger based on Instagram post
  • Precaution for each risk
  • AllState insurance plan recommendation

Final Design

Research

User Research

According to AIG Life Insurance, half of Millennials and Gen Z are not only unaware of what insurance plan to purchase but also don’t have suitable insurance for themselves.

Index System Analysis

I have looked into the current index system of insurance company - how they evaluate users by different variables. Based on personal and economic variables of a user, they analyze the insurance loss and create a personalized plan for customers.

Personal variables include:
  • age, education background, unit nature, professional title, residential stability, and marital status

Economic variables include:
  • monthly income, bank deposit

Competitive Analysis

After understanding the insurance company’s index system, we conducted competitive analysis apps that focus on personal safety, location-based risk alerts, and emergency response.

Understanding the competitors can help identifying strengths, weaknesses, and gaps Risk Detector can fill.

Key takeaways from competitive analysis include:
  • Traditional apps are mostly reactive, which means they can’t prevent the risk itself
  • Competitors lack personalized safety insights
  • Location sharing is a common feature among competitors for crime and safety alerts

Design Process

Ideation

I have found opportunity from UX research - proactive risk assessment can be used to warn users before any dangerous situation happens. It can ultimately reduces trust issue between AllState, an insurance company, and young generations.

Instagram becomes a tool to bridge the gap between AllState and users. By using Instagram API, Allstate is capable of obtaining user information (location, time, activities) and providing accurate data solely back to them.

Wireframes

Iteration

We have explored various designs for a key screen to set a theme for an entire app. While we weren’t able to conduct user testing due to the limited timeframe, we constantly got from a mentor / working professional to develop into more intuitive and organized design.

Solution

Step 1

When logging into Risk Detector, posts on personal accounts are automatically imported and analyzed. Detailed data such as photos, videos, captions, locations, and hashtags are included.

Step 2

The top 5 risk factors based on users’ Instagram posts come up with a percentage of each.

When clicking the module, users can see the precaution for each risk factor. Time, place, and activity that are most likely to cause the danger to appear along with the user’s Instagram post that were used to generate the result.

Step 3

To highlight the expected risk and prevent it, Allstate offers a recommended insurance plan that is customized for each user profile.
